As the map, dated 1880 above suggests this area is full of interest to local historians. In Victorian times, many mines and quarries flourished there and had done since at least the beginning of the eighteenth century. Daniel Owen would have known the area well and been aware of the industrial activity as the machinery would have been transported form Mold Railway station passing his shop in New Street. He used ‘Pantybuarth’, the name of a farm and one of the mines as a location in his last novel, ‘Gwen Tomos’.
