Daniel Owen Memorial Lecture by Jerry Hunter “Humour in Daniel Owen’s Fiction”

Lecture in Welsh with simultaneous translation into English

Professor Jerry Hunter originally from Cincinnati, Ohio is a Professor in the School of Welsh and Celtic Studies at Bangor University and lives in the Nantlle Valley. He was first introduced to Welsh literature while studying English at the University of Cincinnati and learnt Welsh on an intensive course at Lampeter University. He went on to complete an MPhil in Welsh at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth and a PhD in Celtic Literatures and Languages at Harvard University. He worked as a lecturer at Harvard University, on his father’s farm and for Greenpeace. Returning to Wales he initially worked at Cardiff University before joining the staff of Bangor University in 2003. He is a published author of academic works and novels. He won the Wales Book of the Year prize in 2004 and the Prose Medal at the National Eisteddfod in 2010.

His novel for children, Ceffylau’r Cymylau has been adapted into English and published under the title, The Cloud Horses.There is also an English translation of his novel Y Fro Dywyll called Dark Territory described as a gripping historical thriller about a white man’s travels to the centre of the ‘wilderness’ to deal with ‘uncivilized’ people, and a journey into the dark soul of the white man himself’.
