The Battle of Zandvoorde, October 1914
Location: Tyddyn Street Church, Mold CH7 1DX
The Battle of Zandvoorde, October 1914: the first battle of Ypres and the last stand of the 1st battalion the Royal Welch Fusiliers.
Tim Jones will talk about the retreat of the British army in 1914. Zandvoorde was the 7th Division’s attempt to stop the Germans reaching the port of Ostend. He says the RWF got annihilated in this battle and feels such conflicts are largely forgotten about, but he will show what exactly the consequences could have been if the German army had succeeded. He will tell the story of this and of some of the Flintshire men who were in this battle .
Tim is a former engineer who served with the Royal Welch Fusiliers, and a graduate in Archaeology, History, and Heritage at Bangor University. He now works at the RWF museum at Caernarfon and is currently studying for a professional museum qualification with the Museums Association.
